I would advise that you seek opinion from either your GP or a Dive specialist doctor; as diving regardless of the depth with the onset of a cold or congestion can cause severe injury. I hope you enjoy reading our articles and look forward to being able to assist you in the future.

Just wanted to ask a question – I’m meant to be going scuba diving today with a youth club group in a local centre that offers it in a pool. Its inside and everything, but I was just wondering if you can’t scuba dive in a pool with a cold, or whether its only in the sea? I’ve never been before, so I’m not sure how deep the pool is, but I don’t think it’s that deep. Hope you can help, thanks

Intersting comment I have been on many shark dives and still have not seen the dreaded red spalsh, but I suppose it does happen. Good to read your comments keep on supporting the site.

You are correct the Maldives are a great place but I also found a great spot in the Northern Territory of Australia just off Darwin Harbour. Plenty of sharks and the occassional Croc, good visability and warm water.

The problem with diving in shark waters is the water does not stay clear very long. Gets all stained with red stuff. . .

There are no great white sharks to be seen around Angel Island. Mostly because they aren’t there and also because the water is so murky, you wouldn’t see anything until it was too late or gone. The Farallon Islands however are one of the worlds’ centers of great white activity. They are about 26 miles out to sea offshore from the Golden Gate.

The waters offshore of the Golden Gate can be some of the most ‘exciting’ to go boating in.

For most classes, you will need to own a mask, fins, snorkel, and boots (depending on the fins). For scuba quality items, these will cost $250 to $1,000 depending on how fancy you get.
From there, it will depend on what type of diving you do. For a warm water set-up, you can spend another $1,200 to $1,500 on a wetsuit, BCD, and regulator. For a cold water set-up, you can spend $3,000 on a drysuit, BCD, and regulator.
Fit and maintenance means everything in scuba diving. Make sure you can try on all of the gear before buying it. Can you dive it once or twice and still exhange it for something else? If you go with second hand gear, has it been properly maintained? You might get the regulator at half-price, but then spend the other half having it rehabbed.
