do u need to know how to swim to do snorkelling?

i’m 27/m from india . in about 1 week’s time i’m travelling to egypt and want to do a bit of snorkelling there … but i dont know how to swim.

any suggestions ?

what about scuba diving ?

You kind of need to know how to swim, but you don’t need to be an expert at it. Snorkeling merely lets you breathe with your face continually submerged. SCUBA is probably more demanding, you would need to take a course or so.

I smoked for the last 5 years (approx 15 a day), starting when i was 18 and giving up two months ago when I was 23. Since then I've decided to start scuba diving, i have to sit a medical in a couple of days and wondered if i am likely to have any trouble? Also, smoking for only 5 years is this likely to effect my diving at all? Is it still just as safe?

I don't have asthma, or any breathing problems for that matter, I am quite fit and healthy, i had bronchitis a couple winters ago and had pneumonia when i was 13.. Anyone who knows about this kind of thing if they can help me out that would be great! Thanks.

i used to have asthma, i don't anymore. I used to have it so bad id have to use those polmoaide breathing machines when the inhaler wouldn't be enough..

I have smoked regularly for 8 years now and scuba dive on occasion i have never had a problem.

Here’s an old vid I found from about 2002-ish. I went on a shark dive in St. Maarten. Very glad I did it but have a few issues with it in retrospect.
Letting sharks know that Humans = A Feed is pretty dumb I reckon. Even though these sharks are on the “safe list” it’s still not clever.
Having said that, I do like the fact that they only do it once in a while so the sharks don’t come to rely on the humans for food.
As we went down you couldn’t see any sharks anywhere. Then, as the food came out, they were simply there all of a sudden. It was as if they were there the whole time but keeping just out of sight …
One glided so closely over my head that it touched me! It was weird having a wild shark brushing my hair.
This just goes to show how amazingly agile they are. They cruised around, seemingly uninterested and lazy, then they’ll twist around within their own length with such speed and precision. It was a real eye opener.
I’ve always loved sharks in that I-Love-Sharks-But-Man-Am-I-Glad-They-Don’t-Live-In-My-Neighborhood kind of way so all through this dive I was gleefully grinning like an excited school girl.

– 3:20 “Say, is that a shark between your legs?”

The audio is one of Youtube’s free tracks, mine was crap 🙂

Also where can I learn this south India ?

You do not have to be a "stong" or "excellent" swimmer to dive or to snorkel. The important thing is that you are comfortable in the water and aren't claustrophobic with a mask on your face having your nose covered, as you will breathe through your mouth only.

In both scuba and snorkelling you use your legs and the fins on your feet to move, not your hands.

In snorkelling you can we an inflatable vest that will keep you afloat while allowing you to move. In scuba diving the whole idea is to move slowly and not exert yourself. That way you conserve air and get to stay down longer and see more.

I am going to go Scuba Diving for my first time, and I'm going to the Great Barrier Reef. How much does it cost to get PADI certified? How long does it take? Do I need to buy equipment for training? And while diving in the reef can I wear a wet suit that only goes down to my knees and elbows? Thanks

Around the Chicago area the certification costs:

Pool and Class = $200 to $400 based on weeknight group class or private lessons. Continued…
